Legendary WCBS 880 news radio signs off after nearly 6 decades
In a heartfelt sign-off underscored by childhood memories and John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Wayne Cabot, speaking on behalf of WCBS 880, challenged listeners to continue supporting local news as a staple of America.
“We implore you to find that next trusted (news) source,” Cabot told listeners in its final all-news format broadcast before going off the air at midnight on Sunday, becoming the new home for ESPN New York on Monday. “Use it, support it, in word and in deed. It is the most patriotic thing you can do.”
Audacy, owner of the station that dates back to the 1920s and has been an all-news station for almost six decades, announced WCBS AM’s final news broadcast earlier this month. The company said its new agreement with media company Good Karma Brands sends the all-news format off the air in favor of the new home for ESPN New York.
