LISTEN: Yankees radio call as New York clinches ALDS, advance to ALCS
The Yankees are back in the American League Championship Series after their 3-1 win over the Royals on Thursday night in Kansas City.
And it wouldn’t be a Yankees postseason without the voice of John Sterling calling the final out.
“And Weaver deals to Gurriel,” Sterling starts his call on WFAN. “A high fly to center, this is it, Judge is there, he makes the catch! Ballgame over. American League Division Series over, the Yankees win, theeeee Yankees win.”
The longtime Yankees radio announcer was glad to see New York celebrate after their series win, chuckling as he praised the pitching in Game 4.
Gerrit Cole was his ace-like self, delivering seven one-run innings while the combination of Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver continued the Yankees bullpen’s dominance so far this postseason. A Yankees reliever has yet to allow a run in four playoff games this year.
“So great pitching by the Yankees,” Sterling continued. “Cole. Fabulous. Both Holmes and Weaver. 1-2-3. A fabulous victory, the Yankees move on to the American League Championship Series as they celebrate on the field.”
The Yankees will now head back to The Bronx where they’ll await the winner between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians. Their series will end with a decisive Game 5 on Saturday with Game 1 of the ALCS starting Monday at Yankee Stadium.
And Sterling, who retired in the first month of the season, has returned to call the postseason. Perhaps he’ll see the Yankees’ 28th championship before it’s all said and done.
