Manhattanhenge 2024: Here Are The Best Spots To See New York Phenomena

Following the widespread solar storm that created auroras in several parts of the world, New York is bracing for another major solar spectacle. Every year at the end of May tourists flock to Manhattan, New York to witness Manhattanhenge. As May nears its end, the time for Manhattanhenge is here, and it could appear soon on May 28 (Tuesday).

What is Manhattanhenge?

During this twice-a-year phenomenon, the sunlight beams through the East-West street of Manhattan, New York. The astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson claims to have coined the term, by analogy with Stonehenge. During this event, the setting sun or the rising sun is aligned with the east–west streets of the main street grid of Manhattan.

Usually the sunset Manhattanhenge occurs between May 28 and July 13. On the other hand, the sunrise Manhattanhenge occurs between December 5 and January 8.

What are the best places to watch?

The first Manhattanhenge sunset in 2024 will be on May 29 at 8:13 p.m. EDT, and the second will be on July 11 at 8:20 p.m. EDT. The best places to watch the Manhattanhenge are the Tudor City overpass on 42nd Street, the Park Avenue Viaduct near Grand Central Station, and any east-to-west street in Manhattan with a clear view of New Jersey.

The 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd and 57th Streets are generally considered the best places to view the phenomenon. It is advised find a spot as far east as possible that still has views of New Jersey across the Hudson River.
