Mayfield mocks Tommy DeVito with trademark celebration as Bucs embarass Giants
It’s been a bad week for the New York Giants.
The Daniel Jones era has officially come to a close, with the former first round pick requesting and receiving his release after six seasons.
A recipient of a four-year, $160million contract extension, Jones had not performed well enough in 2024 to preserve his starting job, and was officially benched after a defeat to the Carolina Panthers.
Heading into their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Giants had the worst record in the NFC with two wins and eight losses.
Tommy DeVito was confirmed as the starter in Week 12, but struggled in the first half at Metlife Stadium.
New York went three-and-out on the first drive of the game and turned the ball over on downs on their second drive as the quarterback completed just one of two passes for five yards in the opening quarter.
Things didn’t get much better in the second, and DeVito ended the half with 31 yards as his team went in 23-0 down.
While the Giants suffered, Tampa Bay took full advantage, and visiting quarterback Baker Mayfield had a lot of fun.
He threw for 230 yards in the first half, and even managed to fight his way into the end zone with a rushing touchdown.
While his dive across the line was impressive enough, it was his celebration that really caught the eye.
As he got back to his feet, Mayfield hit the Giants and their fans with DeVito’s trademark celebration.
Last year, New York’s QB went viral for putting his hand up in the air and pinching his fingers together after throwing a TD.
DeVito, who has made no secret of his Italian heritage, even won the Bud Light Celebration of the Year Award for his efforts.
And while he didn’t get the chance to pull out the celebration in the first half against Tampa Bay, Mayfield decided to do it for him.
Naturally, his actions caught the attention of fans on social media.
“Tommy DeVito out here catching strays from Baker Mayfield,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport wrote on X.
“Doing this in front of DeVito himself is CRAZY WORK,” another said.
“Oh my. Baker Mayfield just scored a TD and made sure all Giants fans saw him doing the Tommy DeVito celebration. Giants getting embarrassed at home,” journalist Ari Meirov added.
Being on the wrong end of a 23-0 scoreline heading into half-time is bad enough.
But a fellow QB hitting your trademark celebration while you’re sat on the sideline just adds insult to injury.
