MLB News: Yankees Pick Broadcaster to Replace John Sterling: Report

Theeeeeeee Yankees have made a big decision about their next radio play-by-play broadcaster.

Seattle Mariners TV announcer Dave Sims is nearing a deal to become WFAN’s new play-by-play broadcaster on Yankees games, according to the New York Post.

Sims, 71, has called Mariners games on television since 2007. The Post reports the deal has not been finalized.

John Sterling retired (for the second time) at the end of the 2024 World Series, which the Yankees lost in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sterling, 86, had been the voice of the Yankees on the radio since 1989, at one point calling 5,060 consecutive games.

Sims won three consecutive Washington Sportscaster of the Year awards (2018-20) from the National Sports Media Association.

In addition to television work with the Mariners, Sims co-hosts “Basketball & Beyond with Coach K” for Sirius XM with former Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, and is a correspondent for MLB Network and calls Big East college basketball on FS1.

A two-time Emmy Award winner, Sims also won the American Football Foundation’s Outstanding Sportscaster Award in 2003 and the Big East Media Award in 2005. Sims began his career as a sportswriter for the New York Daily News prior to becoming a weekend sports anchor at WCBS-TV.

Sims was also a midday sports talk host on WFAN with Ed Coleman from 1989-92.

In 1991, Sims joined ESPN as a play-by-play announcer for college basketball. From 1998-2014, he did NFL play-by-play, including Sunday Night and Monday Night Football, as well as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, for Westwood One.

Sterling retired in April after calling 5,420 regular-season Yankees games and 211 postseason Yankees games, according to the team’s official website. His mellifluous nicknames and iconic victory call (“theeeee Yankees win!”) became iconic in the Bronx and beyond.

In October, Sterling returned to call the Yankees’ postseason games on WFAN.

Among many career honors, Sterling and broadcast partner Suzyn Waldman were inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2016.

NJ Advance Media reported in September that Sims had interviewed for the Yankees’ job.

“We’ll see what happens,” Sims told NJ Advance Media at the time. “I love what I’m doing here in Seattle. New York is home. That’s all I can say.”
