MTA Transit Services for New Year’s Eve in New York

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced its transit service plans for New Year’s celebrations in New York, offering additional trains and special schedules to accommodate holiday travellers and event-goers.

Most agencies will operate on weekend or holiday schedules, with extra service for those heading into New York City for New Year’s Eve festivities, including Billy Joel’s concert at UBS Arena in Elmont.

Subway Services

On Tuesday, 31 December, subways will run on a regular weekday schedule with increased service on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 42 St Shuttle lines in the evening and into the early hours of 1 January. The 4 train will operate express until 2:45 am.

On Wednesday, 1 January, subway services will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Bus Services

Most bus routes in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan will run on reduced weekday schedules on New Year’s Eve, while some routes in Queens will follow a regular weekday schedule. Staten Island buses will operate on a weekday schedule. Detours may occur due to road closures around Midtown Manhattan.

All buses across the five boroughs will follow a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day

Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)

Eleven additional trains will run on the Babylon, Montauk, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, and Port Washington branches to Grand Central Madison or Penn Station starting in the early evening of New Year’s Eve. Extra trains will also serve the UBS Arena for Billy Joel’s concert.

Twelve additional trains will operate overnight on New Year’s Eve for riders returning to Long Island from the city.

LIRR trains will then follow a Sunday schedule throughout 1 January.

Metro-North Railroad

Regular weekday schedules will run on the three East of Hudson lines, with additional late-night and post-midnight services.

Metro-North will offer hourly services on most lines, with extra trains on the New Haven Line. The Wassaic, Danbury, and Waterbury branches will follow their usual weekend schedules.

West of Hudson lines will run additional late-night services following New Year’s Eve and operate a weekend schedule on New Year’s Day.

Access-A-Ride

Paratransit services will run 24/7 during the holiday period. Riders should account for potential delays caused by holiday traffic and Times Square closures.

Bridges and Tunnels

All temporary daytime road closures at MTA Bridges and Tunnels will end by 1:00 pm on Tuesday, 31 December. Normal operations and limited lane closures will resume on 2 January.
