NBC New York makes embarrassing error after Knicks’ NBA playoff run ends

NEW York Knicks fans will be wishing their Game 7 decider against the Indiana Pacers went a different way – and one television station obviously thought it did.

NBC returned from a commercial shortly after 6pm on Sunday with a “Breaking News” alert followed by a graphic that read “KNICKS ADVANCE”.

In reality, it was the Pacers that claimed a 130-109 Game 7 victory at Madison Square Garden.

Despite the visual mistake, NBC New York anchor Gus Rosendale correctly reported that the Knicks had lost.

“We’re back with some breaking news,” Rosendale said.

“And, unfortunately, we can now confirm the Knicks’ playoff run is over.”

After the update, Rosendale passed to sports anchor John Chandler back in the newsroom.

He confirmed that the Knicks was “not advancing here” despite what the graphic said.

It was a famous day for the Pacers in New York, as they stunned the Knicks.

The Pacers will now head to Boston to open the NBA Eastern Conference finals against the Celtics on Tuesday.

“Well, we’re the uninvited guest,” coach Rick Carlisle said.

“Here we are. When you win a Game 7 in Madison Square Garden, you’ve made history. It’s very, very difficult to do.”

The Pacers made 29 of their 38 shots in the first half, a shooting percentage of 76.3 per cent.

That was the highest in the postseason since 1997.

Tyrese Haliburton finished with 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting.

“I knew today is Game 7 – unload the clip, have no regrets,” Haliburton said.

“I would hate to be p****d all summer about not shooting the ball today.

“So for me it was just about coming out playing the right way.”

It was a day of massive disappointment for Knicks fans, who had seen their team take a 2-0 lead in the series.

“Knowing that this team gave its best effort all year long, I can live with the result,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said.

“It’s disappointing, but in the end there’s only going to be one happy team.

“Twenty-nine teams will fall short. This team fought like crazy and there’s no regret.”
