Saturday, November 23, 2024
Travelers across the U.S. are urged to prepare for significant disruptions during the post-Thanksgiving travel period- Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, West Virginia and other U.S. cities in the list.
A winter storm system threatens to bring heavy snow, high winds, and freezing temperatures to multiple states.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued advisories for a widespread cold and unsettled weather pattern impacting much of the northern and northeastern regions from November 29 to December 5.
States Facing Heavy Snowfall
The storm is forecast to blanket 11 states with significant snow accumulations, affecting travel on roads and in the air.
These states include:
- Wisconsin
- Michigan
- Indiana
- Ohio
- West Virginia
- Pennsylvania
- New York
- Massachusetts
- Vermont
- New Hampshire
- Maine
A slight risk (20–40% chance) of heavy snow is expected for parts of the Great Lakes and interior Northeast, as per the NWS Climate Prediction Center.
This system may also bring high winds and much below-normal temperatures, resulting in dangerously low wind chills.
Nationwide Winter Storm Advisories
Additional winter weather warnings and advisories are in effect across 15 states, including Maryland, Idaho, California, Nevada, Alaska, Montana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, and Tennessee.
Some areas could see snow accumulations of up to 4 feet, paired with hazardous high winds.
Cold Air Outbreak in Northern Plains
The Northern Plains are bracing for the most severe cold air outbreak of the season, with minimum temperatures dropping below -10°F in some areas.
The region faces a moderate risk (40–60%) of hazardous cold, compounded by high wind chills that could pose risks to travelers and residents alike.
Travel Disruptions Expected
The timing of this storm coincides with one of the year’s busiest travel periods, potentially causing widespread delays and cancellations for road and air travelers.
The NWS warns that unsettled winter weather will heighten risks across major transportation corridors, particularly in the East and Northeast.
Travelers are advised to monitor weather updates closely, allow extra time for their journeys, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
Local authorities may issue additional warnings or advisories as the storm system evolves.
