New York fair odds: Didia hear about this one?

The New York is an early season preview of the filly and mare turf division, as the field of 13 for the 1 3/16-mile turf race features a trio of Grade 1 winners plus a European invader making her second start Stateside.

#10 War Like Goddess is one of the aforementioned Grade 1 winners. It would be tough to dismiss her at her best, but it’s likely her best is at a trip longer than this one. Plus, this is her seven-year-old debut off a five-month layoff. As the morning line favorite at 4-1 I’m inclined to watch one if she gets bet like that-especially since post 10 is 0-for-21 on this course and at this distance since 2015.

#3 Didia benefits from an inside draw, and-more importantly, added ground. Yes, she won the Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf going 1 1/16 miles, but I don’t see that as her best trip with her best races coming beyond 1 1/8 miles, which she gets here. I expect a more midpack trip from the inside versus having to be too close to the likes of Fev Rover and other speed to the outside.

The presence of #2 English Rose, second in the Jenny Wiley last out, 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Didia in third, is sure to attract some money given this is her second start off the layoff. Still, nothing I’ve seen from her makes me think she’s worth betting as the favorite here. Of course she can win, but this is a filly I will absolutely let beat me.

#5 American Sonja interests me a bit if she gets ignored. Trainer Joseph O’Brien plus jockey Frankie Dettori plus European form might attract too much money, but at 10-1 morning line I’m definitely at least tabbing to watch the board.

I’ll look to bet either War Like Goddess or Didia at their fair odds with an expectation that I will get them on the latter but not the former. I’ll also look to play around with 3, 5, 10 in the exotics if English Rose is favored.
