New York Giants bolster secondary in reunion with veteran cornerback | Sporting News

After a visit with free-agent cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, the New York Giants came to terms on a one-year deal with the veteran.

Jackson visited the Giants’ facility Friday for a physical, and it seems all things were clear on that end. Given the Giants’ need to bring depth into an extremely young cornerback room, Jackson fits the type of cheap addition New York could afford to make.

The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed immediately, but we’ll update this post when more information is available.

Jackson is coming off a down year in 2023, which was his third with the Giants. He allowed a 65.9% completion rate on 82 targets, along with 13.9 yards per reception, two touchdowns and a 98.3 passer rating, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Giants were hoping third-year cornerback Cor’Dale Flott would start the season as the No. 2 opposite Deonte Banks. However, Flott struggled during training camp and then picked up a quad injury that has kept him out since Aug. 11.

Nick McCloud has also been working as a boundary cornerback after losing the starting nickel role to rookie Dru Phillips. The reunion with Jackson gives the Giants a clearer depth chart at the position, though, as he’s expected to be the starter now.

The Giants are hoping Jackson can return to his 2022 form when he allowed an 85.3 passer rating in coverage on 54 targets. He has historically produced better in man coverage, but Jackson posted a 68.2 passer rating in zone during the 2021 season.

The switch from Wink Martindale’s aggressive, man-heavy scheme to Shane Bowen’s zone-heavy, two-high scheme will be a change, but it should allow Jackson to keep his eyes in the backfield more often.

The Giants needed some depth at the cornerback position and while it’s not the most exciting signing, Jackson’s presence could be a boost to a questionable position.
