New York Giants expected to cut ties with Daniel Jones after season, per insider | Sporting News
The Daniel Jones era appears to be over for the New York Giants.
As the organization ponders during the bye week the decision on whether to bench Jones for the remainder of the season, it seems the ultimate decision will come during the offseason.
As The Athletic looked at all of the teams with potential to change starting quarterbacks during the 2025 offseason, the Giants are certainly at the top of that list.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic made it pretty clear on what will happen to Jones both coming out of the bye week and during the offseason.
“It’s over for Jones in New York. The Giants will bench him soon and then cut ties with him at the end of the season,” Duggan wrote.
This doesn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention. Though this regime didn’t draft Jones in 2019, they did hand him a four-year extension worth $160 million following the 2022 season.
They were able to navigate the contract to get out after two seasons, but that also means they will incur a $22.2 million dead cap hit while saving $19.4 million in cap space, per Over The Cap.
Duggan noted the Giants’ efforts to replace Jones during the 2024 offseason, citing the front office’s attempts to draft an eventual successor.
“The Giants tried to draft his replacement this past offseason but couldn’t move up and decided against selecting the likes of Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix, all of whom were still on the board when New York picked wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6,” Duggan wrote.
Set for a top-three pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the Giants have a chance to select a new signal caller. Whether they will do so is a conversation that will dominate the offseason.
But it’s pretty clear Jones is on the way out.
