New York Giants injury report Week 1: Latest updates on Drew Lock, three others | Sporting News

The New York Giants are preparing to host the Minnesota Vikings to kick off the 2024 season at MetLife Stadium.

Both the Giants and Vikings come into the season with massive question marks. While New York tries to navigate itself through the Daniel Jones contract, the Vikings must deal with the repercussions from losing their first-round quarterback to a season-ending knee injury.

The injury reports for both teams are pretty short, but there are some key players to keep an eye on for the Giants. After practicing Wednesday, the Giants had Thursday off so the participation levels are estimations.

Ahead of the Week 1 matchup, Sporting News will have the latest updates on the injury report for the Giants throughout the week.

Giants injury report NFL Week 1

QB Drew Lock (abdomen)

  • Wednesday: Limited participant
  • Thursday: Limited participant

Lock is still working his way back from the abdomen injury he suffered during the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. Even if he’s not fully healthy, the former second-round pick is still likely to be active in an emergency situation in case Daniel Jones gets injured. Unless he suffers a setback and doesn’t practice Friday, it would be a surprise if he is ruled out.

S Dane Belton (back)

  • Wednesday: Limited participant
  • Thursday: Limited participant

Despite holding the starting safety role opposite Jason Pinnock to begin training camp, the third-year defender gave way to rookie Tyler Nubin. It was expected eventually considering Nubin’s skill set and draft capital, but Belton had a strong showing during camp. He’s currently the No. 3 safety behind the starters so his status will be vital to watch.

LB Micah McFadden (groin)

  • Wednesday: Limited participant
  • Thursday: Limited participant

As a part of the starting tandem with Bobby Okereke in the middle of Shane Bowen’s defense, McFadden is a key piece of the unit. He’s coming off a career year and isn’t fully healthy from the groin injury he suffered during the second preseason game against the Houston Texans. His participation level in Friday’s practice will go a long way to determine his status for Week 1.

WR Gunner Olszewski (groin)

  • Wednesday: Limited participant
  • Thursday: Limited participant

It’s still very much up in the air whether Olszewski will play against the Vikings. Though he likely won’t be a factor on offense if he’s active, he’s a key piece of the special teams unit as a solid returner. If he can’t go, the Giants are likely to give Wan’Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton and rookie Tyrone Tracy some snaps as return men.
