New York Giants quarterback competition update from OTAs | Sporting News

The New York Giants are heading into the final week of organized team activities (OTAs), and there has been a keen eye on the quarterback position.

While Daniel Jones is working his way back from surgery to repair a torn ACL, the Giants also have Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito working at quarterback throughout OTAs.

With a full week of OTAs remaining followed up by a three-day mandatory minicamp in June, it’s time to take a quick look at the quarterback competition for the Giants.

MORE: Takeaways from Day 5 of Giants OTAs

Jones has been working as the clear starter with the first-team offense during 7-on-7 drills. He has yet to progress to 11-on-11 drills, but head coach Brian Daboll said Jones is getting close to that mark.

“We’ve talked about it. I’d say he’s getting closer and closer,” Daboll said Thursday. “He’s only 6 1/2 months out, so he’s kind of right on schedule in terms of his rehab plan where we have him. It’s something we’ve talked about. We’re not at that point yet.”

Jones has looked the best out of the quarterbacks thus far through the first two weeks of OTAs, and it doesn’t seem like there’s any real threat for his starting role once he’s fully healthy.

As for Lock, it has been a bit of a bumpy road. The former second-round pick has had some highlight plays, but he’s also struggled with accuracy during 11-on-11 drills.

He’s certainly making progress in terms of his comfortability in the offense, but there are still throws that are wide misses, according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic.

Drew Lock looked more comfortable than last week, completing 19 of 24 passes in 11-on-11 periods as the first-team quarterback. A steady diet of short throws aided Lock’s completion percentage, but he connected with wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson on a deep crossing route and hit undrafted rookie wide receiver Ayir Asante on a long touchdown. Lock still had a few misses that were way off target.

Lock has been the clear QB2 option for the Giants throughout the entirety of the spring, and he’s been the one to step in with the first-team offense when Jones sits out.

Rounding out the Giants’ quarterback competition is DeVito, who is clearly the third quarterback on the depth chart right now.

Duggan noted that while DeVito has been completing a high number of passes, he’s also dealing with the same major issue from his rookie season.

Tommy DeVito completed 8 of 13 passes with the second-team offense. His favorite target was wide receiver Miles Boykin, who tallied four catches. DeVito continues to hold the ball for extended stretches in the pocket, which was an issue last season.

So as it currently stands, Jones is the clear starting quarterback whenever he’s fully healthy. Lock is steadily keeping the backup role to himself while DeVito looks to develop his game as the QB3.
