The New York Giants have released former University of West Florida wide receiver John Jiles.

Jiles was one of the team’s cuts on Sunday, in preparation for the 4 p.m. (EST) deadline on Tuesday that requires NFL teams to go to a 53-man roster. Jiles, who was signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent, hauled in two receptions for 41 yards during the preseason. He also lost a fumble.

Just recently, Jiles hurdled a defender when the Giants played New York in the third week of the preseason during a 21-yard reception. He did something similar when he was with UWF, hurdling over players a couple times. Jiles hurdled a player against Kentucky Wesleyan College and the University of West Georgia last season.

“(I asked him), ‘At what point in your mind are you thinking, “I’m going to jump over this human?”’ I’ve never thought that. I’ve never had that thought cross my mind,” UWF football head coach Kaleb Nobles said of the 6-foot-3 wide receiver. “I’m not the best athlete in the world. … When he jumps, I kind of just pause like, ‘OK. Hope he lands on his feet.’ I just hope he lands it and he’s healthy. … Seeing guys do that never ceases to amaze me.”

Jiles wasn’t the only receiver cut on Sunday, as New York also released Ayir Asante.

In his lone season with UWF, Jiles broke a handful of receiving records. He had incredible chemistry with quarterback Peewee Jarrett, as Jiles hauled in 1,255 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns on 66 receptions – nearly double the second-best receiver in Caden Leggett. Jiles had a monster 277-yard, three-touchdown game at North Greensville last September.
