The Giants announced that they have released quarterback Daniel Jones on Nov. 22.
The news comes after Jones was demoted to fourth string quarterback following a 2-8 start to the regular season.
“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” Giants owner John Mara said in a statement Friday morning. “We mutually agreed that would be the best for him and the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Jones’ Giants career saw the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The highest point came in the 2023 playoffs, where Jones led the Giants to their first playoff victory since Super Bowl 46 and the Giants took down the Vikings 31-24 in the wildcard round. In the game, Jones threw for 301 yards, two touchdowns and ran for 78 yards.
The playoff performance came off the heels of the 2022 season, which was the best year of Jones’ career in Giant blue. Jones completed 67% of his passes for 3,205 yards for 15 touchdowns with only five interceptions. That season, Jones also rushed for a career high 708 yards and seven touchdowns. The 2022 season earned Jones a four year 160 million dollar extension. But Jones was only able to make it through a year and a half of the contract.
After missing nearly all of the 2023 regular season due to injury, this year was seen as a do or die year for Jones, and unfortunately for him, it turned out to be the latter, as Jones went 2-8 with the team. Throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games. Jones is expected to clear waivers and become a free agent.
