New York Giants rookie tight end expected for big role in passing game | Sporting News

New York Giants rookie tight end Theo Johnson has a chance to make an impact early in his NFL career.

Following the retirement of Darren Waller, the depth chart at the tight end position for the Giants is wide open.

Johnson, the team’s fourth-round pick in 2024, enters the league as one of the most athletic tight ends to ever compete at the NFL combine.

According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, the Penn State product has a chance to take over a significant role in the passing game during his rookie season.

“With Darren Waller’s retirement now official, Johnson has a real chance to seize a big role in the passing game,” Stapleton wrote.

Stapleton also noted that Johnson has displayed “soft hands and an ability to run smooth routes at the intermediate part of the field” throughout the offseason workouts.

Though Daniel Bellinger and Lawrence Cager appear to be Johnson’s biggest competitors, the Giants had an eye on the former Nittany Lion once Day 3 of the draft started.

It will be interesting to see how quickly Johnson can climb the depth chart, but it certainly seems as though the job is eventually his to lose.
