The New York Giants will begin cutting the roster as they work to get down to 53 players before the deadline Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
Following the 10-6 loss against the New York Jets on Saturday night, head coach Brian Daboll said the roster will be down to 53 players before the next practice. That is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. ET.
The roster cuts could begin as early as Sunday.
Keep in mind the different verbiage when a player is let go as well. A released player is a vested veteran— those who have accrued four seasons in the NFL. They immediately become free agents.
A waived player has not accrued four seasons and must go through waivers. All other teams will have a chance to claim waived players on their 53-man roster by 12:00 p.m. ET on Aug. 28.
A new rule was added as well this offseason. The Giants can place two players on the Reserve/Injured list with designations to return. In the past, any player placed on that list before the deadline would be ineligible to return for the regular season.
The Giants are sixth in the waiver order, and they are expected to be very active on the waiver wire to address several areas on the depth chart.
