The New York Giants signed tight end Theo Johnson to a four-year rookie deal, the team announced Wednesday.
Johnson was the team’s fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The only remaining draft pick yet sign his rookie contract is second-round safety Tyler Nubin.
The Penn State product is expected to compete for a role within the Giants offense with Daniel Bellinger and Darren Waller—pending the latter’s retirement decision.
General manager Joe Schoen told the media following the draft that the Giants selected Johnson in the fourth round with Waller’s uncertainty in mind.
“We had to take that into account for sure,” Schoen said Waller’s potential retirement. “But you know, Theo was the top player on our board. I’m trying to think, if there were any of these guys that we took that weren’t the top player on the board at the time…last night we left, he was sticking out for us. You always think when you come in the next morning, he’s going to go sooner and may not be there and we’re excited to get Theo.”
Johnson didn’t have much production at Penn State with 938 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in 45 career games (29 starts). But tested as an elite athlete at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Johnson measured in at 6-foot-6 and 259 pounds with 33-inch arms. He posted a 4.57 in the 40-yard dash to go along with a 39.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-5-inch broad jump.
