New York Giants sign free-agent safety after workout | Sporting News

The New York Giants are signing free-agent safety Raheem Layne following a workout Wednesday.

With some help needed in the secondary, the Giants are looking to a 25-year-old with 11 games of experience who is coming off a torn ACL in October last year.

The news of the signing was first reported by Dan Duggan of The Athletic.

After going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Indiana, Layne signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. He spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad but got signed to the active roster in December, logging six games.

After starting the 2023 season on the active roster, Layne tore his ACL in October, appearing in just five games before landing on the Reserve/Injured list.

Layne hasn’t seen much playing time on defense but mostly worked as a special teamer. He’s likely a camp body considering the Giants have only three healthy safeties at the time of this signing — Jason Pinnock, Tyler Nubin and Alex Johnson.

Gervarrius Owens (knee), Elijah Riley (concussion) and Jalen Mills (calf) are all dealing with injuries. Mills started training camp in the NFI list and has yet to make his debut.
