New York Giants surprisingly listed as suitors for free-agent center | Sporting News

The New York Giants are hoping second-year center John Michael Schmitz can take the next step in his development.

However, one NFL analyst believes the Giants should be in the market to add competition to the offensive line, specifically at the center and guard positions.

In listing potential land spots for some of the top free agents, Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut listed the Giants as suitors for center Connor Williams.

The Giants are committed to Schmitz as they hope to further his development since using the No. 35 pick on him during the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Minnesota product struggled during his rookie season, especially in pass protection where he allowed 30 total pressures and five sacks on 484 pass-blocking snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

It’s unlikely the Giants would sign Williams as a center, though it would be nice to have some added depth behind Schmitz.

Williams would likely compete with Jermaine Eluemunor and Jon Runyan at the guard positions. But the Giants seem pretty committed to the veteran duo as the starting tandem going into the season.

It also doesn’t seem likely the Giants are going to move Evan Neal from the right tackle spot to begin the season. If they get to that place, though, Eluemnor could slide to right tackle with Williams hypothetically taking over at left guard.

Either way, this is all just speculation and likely won’t come to fruition so Giants fans should prepare themselves to go into the season with the current starting five that arrive at training camp.
