New York Jets’ draft bust running out of NFL chances, cut by Jacksonville | Sporting News

Former New York Jets‘ wide receiver Denzel Mims has been released by an NFL team for the second time in two months.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers gave up on the 26-year-old Mims this past June, the Jacksonville Jaguars sent the former second-round draft pick packing. Mims has only one seven-yard reception to show for his three preseason appearances this summer.

Mims, the No. 59 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, has not played in a regular season game since 2022 with the Jets. He logged 30 appearances for the Green & White over a three-year span (2020-22), totaling 676 yards receiving and no touchdowns.

After the receiver’s agent publicly requested a trade for his client, Mims’s days as a Jet appeared limited. New York made the Baylor product a gameday inactive for the first six weeks of the 2022 campaign. He was targeted 25 times over 10 games, making only 11 catches.

As a pro, all with the Jets, Mims secured only 42 of 92 receiving targets. He gained 13 or fewer receiving yards in five of his last 10 games.

The Jets traded Mims away for next to nothing 13 months ago. New York sent the player and a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Detroit Lions for a conditional 2025 sixth-rounder in return.

It’s certainly a possibility that the end of the road is near for the once-promising prospect’s NFL career.
