New York Jets ‘prefer to move on’ from Aaron Rodgers in 2025: Report

The Aaron Rodgers Experiment with the New York Jets looks like a catastrophic failure that could set the franchise back years.

Rodgers and the Jets (3-8) are mired in a downward spiral that shows no signs signs of a change. They have lost seven of their last eight games and are essentially out of the playoff picture. Rodgers has looked like a shell of the four-time NFL MVP the Jets thought they were getting when they traded to acquire him in 2023. Rodgers is off to the worst 11-game start of his 20-year career.

“I’m not playing as well as I would’ve liked to play, for sure,” Rodgers told reporters following the Jets’ 28-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. “The beauty in this game is it’s a team game. The frustrating part is that if you’re a great competitor, you hold yourself to a standard that’s not unrealistic, and I haven’t reached that standard this year.”

Rodgers, 40, has said he hopes to return in 2025.

“I think so, yeah,” Rodgers told reporters last week when asked if he plans to play in 2025.

Rodgers reportedly wants to play for the Jets in 2025, but the Jets may have plans that don’t include Rogers for next season.

SNY’s Connor Hughes reported Tuesday that sources said “the team prefers to move on from Rodgers.”

There have been signs that Jets and Rodgers may part ways after the season. The latest sign being owner Woody Johnson’s decision to fire general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday, six weeks after Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh on Oct. 8. Douglas and Saleh were instrumental in bringing Rodgers to New York.

Another red flag was a report in The Athletic on Johnson wanting Saleh to bench Rodgers following the team’s ugly 10-9 Week 4 loss to the Denver Broncos. Rodgers, who didn’t play well in the game, remained the starter, but Saleh was dismissed eight days later.

Rodgers essentially missed all of last season due to the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in Week 1 of the 2023 season. The Jets were given a pass and when Rodgers returned healthy for the 2024 season, expectations skyrocketed. The Jets were expected to earn at least a playoff berth, with some Super Bowl predictions sprinkled in the mix. Unfortunately for the Jets, Rodgers has looked like the more recent – old – version of himself rather than the version that will get him into the Hall of Fame.
