New York Knicks Eye Major Trade To Bolster Center Depth: Targets Revealed

The New York Knicks have made significant moves this NBA offseason, positioning themselves as serious contenders in the Eastern Conference following a successful 2023-24 campaign. However, there remains a glaring hole in the roster—the backup center position.

With Mitchell Robinson coming off ankle surgery, the Knicks are exploring trade options and veteran signings to solidify their frontcourt depth before the season begins.

Potential Trade Candidates and Veteran Signings

According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Knicks are closely monitoring several centers as potential trade targets, including Nik Richards from the Charlotte Hornets, Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz, and Robert Williams of the Portland Trail Blazers.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst added that Jonas Valančiūnas could also be a name to watch in the coming months. These players would provide much-needed depth behind Robinson, whose injury history remains a concern for the team.

While Robinson is expected to be ready for training camp, his recovery could take time, and the Knicks can’t afford to wait too long to address their depth at center. Precious Achiuwa, who recently re-signed with the team, is capable of filling in at both power forward and center.

However, Jericho Sims, the only other true center on the roster, is still unproven in a significant role.

With unsigned free agents like JaVale McGee and Bismack Biyombo still available, the Knicks have a few options if they choose to sign a veteran before training camp.

Earlier in the offseason, the team showed interest in signing Bruno Fernando and Omer Yurtseven, but both have since signed elsewhere.

Impact of Offseason Moves on Knicks’ Depth

The Knicks had a busy offseason, re-signing key players like Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Precious Achiuwa while adding Mikal Bridges via trade and Cameron Payne in free agency.

These moves have strengthened their backcourt and wing depth, but the departure of Isaiah Hartenstein to the Oklahoma City Thunder left a void in the center rotation.

Mitchell Robinson, who remains the lone low-post presence on the team, will be essential for the Knicks’ success. His health, rebounding, and defense will be especially crucial in a conference stacked with dominant big men like Joel Embiid, Kristaps Porziņģis, and Bam Adebayo.

However, relying solely on Robinson is risky, especially given his injury history, which is why securing a reliable backup center is a priority for the front office.

The Knicks’ decision to swing for the fences by acquiring Mikal Bridges has opened up a championship window, but without addressing the center position, their path to a title could be hindered. Adding veteran leadership and depth in the frontcourt will be crucial as they look to build on their 50-win season from last year and compete with top-tier teams like the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.

Championship Aspirations

New York has moved from a team stuck in mediocrity to a legitimate contender, thanks to the leadership of Jalen Brunson and the addition of star power like Bridges and Anunoby.

Last season, the Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Semifinals, only to lose a close Game 7 to the Indiana Pacers. This year, they have their sights set even higher, with a championship as a realistic goal.

With a core group of Brunson, Anunoby, Bridges, Julius Randle, Josh Hart, and Donte DiVincenzo, the Knicks have the depth and versatility to challenge the Celtics and other top teams in the East.

However, the decisions they make surrounding their center position could be the difference between falling short and lifting the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the first time in over five decades.
