New York Priest Who Allowed Sabrina Carpenter To Shoot Bold Scenes In Church Gets Sacked
A New York priest, Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, has been removed from his duties at a Brooklyn church following backlash over Sabrina Carpenter‘s provocative music video filmed on church premises. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn announced the decision Monday, citing both the controversial video and unrelated financial misconduct.
Carpenter’s music video for Feathers, released on October 31, 2023, stirred outrage for its bold scenes. The video, shot at Our Lady of Mount Carmel – Annunciation Parish, features Carpenter dancing in front of the ornate altar in a black dress and veil, with colourful coffins as props. The church’s diocese had previously expressed dismay, stating proper filming procedures weren’t followed.
Bishop Robert Brennan revealed the video was just the start of concerns surrounding Gigantiello’s leadership. Investigations uncovered unauthorised financial transfers, including $1.9 million in parish funds sent to accounts linked to Frank Carone, a former aide to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
While some funds were repaid with interest, federal investigators have since subpoenaed the church for records. Though no charges have been filed, the diocese stressed full cooperation with law enforcement.
Gigantiello’s administrative powers were revoked, with Bishop Witold Mroziewski now overseeing the parish.
In response to the video backlash, Gigantiello admitted approving the shoot was a “lapse in judgment.” Yet, the broader review has further tainted his reputation.
Sabrina Carpenter’s reaction
Amid the fallout, Carpenter made light of the situation during a September concert, joking, “Should we talk about how I got the mayor indicted?” Her humour underscores the widespread attention the incident has garnered.
