New York state job earning up to six figures opens, but only for under-35s

It’s not every day that a job ad cuts off at age 35, but that is exactly what the New York government have done for applications for New York State Park Police.

For young people looking for swap the nine-to-five for more action, New York State Park Police has opened applications with the salary starting at $61,587.

Instead of an office, successful candidates would spend their time in one of New York’s iconic state parks, patrolling sandy beaches, scenic trails, or historic landmarks, helping visitors and protecting the environment.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that employment of workers aged 65 or older has grown by 117 percent within 20 years and is projected to continue to rise in coming decades.

While some older people have complained that they are overlooked for jobs they are qualified for, unemployment among younger generations is a rising issue in the U.S. According to the bureau, the youth unemployment rate, at 9.8 percent in July 2024, was 1.1 percentage points higher than the rate in July 2023.

New York State Park Police requires a very specific level of fitness, and it is because of this that the recruiters are looking for a candidate aged no older than 35.

As an example of the fitness requirement of the role, candidates aged 35 must be able to complete at least 24 pushups, complete at least 35 situps in one minute, and run 1.5 miles in 13:43 or faster to pass.

Although the age limit is strict, there is an exception for those who have served in the military, who could have an age extension of up to seven years. Those who rise through the ranks could be looking at annual salaries over $100,000.

After the starting salary, there is plenty of opportunity for growth, too, especially if you are stationed in areas like New York City, Westchester, or Long Island, where you can rake in an extra $15,000 in geographic pay.

In a statement, Park Police Chief Michael Daddona said: “During my career, I have seen every level of this profession. It is a challenging and rewarding career. Our Park Police are relied upon to help people during extreme weather events, conduct criminal investigations and enforce laws on New York State’s waterways and trails.

“Our new recruits will be joining a team of dedicated officers who provide a great public service to the people of New York State.”

The park office department also offers health insurance, paid time off, retirement at half pay after 25 years, and all of the uniform, equipment and other required items for the job are provided.

Applicants will need to pass background checks, and complete medical and psychological evaluations. Then there is a six-month police academy.

You don’t need to have taken the civil service exam last September to apply, and if you meet the requirements (U.S. citizen, New York resident, high school diploma or equivalent, driver’s license), you are good to go. You will need 60 college credits, but veterans with two years of service require only 30.

Applications are being accepted through February 2025. More information on the role and how to apply is available at the NY State Parks website.
