New York state Thanksgiving weekend travel forecast

Wednesday will bring dry weather across the state if you are traveling for the holiday. That will change on Thanksgiving Day. Localized heavy lakesnow will impact some communites Friday through the weekend.

What You Need To Know

  • Light rain and elevation wet snow on Thanksgiving across most of the state

  • Coldest air of the season arrives Friday through the weekend

  • Most areas Friday through Sunday will have a flurry or two

  • Heavy lake-effect snow will occur on a mainly west wind with tough travel 


A weak low in the central part of the country will push east well south of the state.  This will bring steady rain forthe Thanksgiving parade in New York City as well as the lower Hudson Valley.

Like we saw last Friday, there will be snow, especially with elevation from Jamestown to the Catskills. The highest elevations east of Jamestown to the Catskills may see a couple inches of accumulation. Interstate and Intra state highways and major roads are expected to be fine.

Lake-effect snow develops Friday night

Travel in and around the Tug Hill as well as the Western Southern Tier will be dificult within the lake-effect band. The rest of the state will be generally dry. From Friday night into Sunday locally 2 to 3 feet will be possible for the higher elevations of the Tug Hill.

The higher elevations of the Western Southern Tier has the potential for a foot or more from Friday night through Sunday.

A few slick spots will be possible Monday morning from about Rochester to Syracuse.
