New York to impose temporary flight restrictions amid drone activity concerns
New York State — Governor Kathy Hochul announced, New York officials are set to implement temporary flight restrictions over critical infrastructure sites as a precautionary measure in response to recent drone activity.
Hochul said,
Since mid-November, New York has been carefully monitoring reports of drone activity and we have been communicating closely with our federal partners. I’ve spoken with Secretary Mayorkas multiple times and was just informed that he has coordinated with federal partners and the FAA plans to grant temporary flight restrictions over some of New York’s critical infrastructure sites — this action is purely precautionary; there are no threat to these sites.
The governor emphasized that while no public safety or national security threats have been detected, the state will continue to monitor the situation closely.
This move follows the delivery of a state-of-the-art drone detection system from the Biden-Harris Administration earlier this week.
Hochul also called on Congress to pass legislation that would provide states and local law enforcement with the authority and resources needed to manage drone technology effectively. she said,
Public safety is my top priority and I will stop at nothing to keep my constituents safe.
