New York Weather Alert: Wildfire Smoke and Showers Impact Veterans Day Travel Near Albany

Albany, NY – Wildfire smoke from the southern New York and New Jersey area is drifting northward, bringing potential health risks and reduced air quality to the Albany area at the start of the week. Residents are urged to take precautions, particularly those with respiratory issues, as smoky conditions are expected to linger. Additionally, a wave of rain will move through the region starting on Veterans Day, further impacting visibility and travel.
According to the National Weather Service, smoke from nearby wildfires is moving north due to shifting winds, contributing to localized poor air quality. Officials advise wearing masks outdoors, especially for vulnerable individuals, and to limit prolonged outdoor activity. Showers are expected Monday morning, with a chance of showers early on Veterans Day, providing some relief from the dry conditions, though visibility may remain compromised.
Veterans Day Forecast: The Albany area can expect showers with a high near 62 degrees. South winds will reach speeds of 7 to 10 mph, with gusts possibly up to 21 mph in the afternoon. Rainfall amounts will remain light, mostly under a tenth of an inch, but enough to potentially disrupt Veterans Day parades or outdoor gatherings.
Extended Outlook: After Monday’s showers, conditions clear up on Tuesday, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 49 degrees. By Wednesday, sunny skies persist, though temperatures will dip with highs near 46 degrees. Cloud cover returns on Thursday, bringing a slight chance of showers into the evening with highs in the upper 40s.
As conditions change, residents should monitor local air quality updates and weather advisories. Visit airnow.gov for current air quality alerts.
