New York’s Clean Slate Act seals criminal records to give fresh starts
ALBANY, N.Y. — The Clean Slate Act took effect in New York State Saturday, after being signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in November 2023.
The law automatically seals certain criminal records after a required waiting period and several requirements.
As we work to improve public safety and expand economic opportunity for all, the Clean Slate Act will play a critical role in helping New Yorkers find jobs, housing, and opportunities in education.
In order to qualify, a person convicted or jailed for a misdemeanor must wait three years, while a person convicted or jailed for a felony must wait eight years.
Anyone who is convicted of class A felonies like murder or registered as a sex offender is not eligible.
The person must maintain a clean record and no longer be on probation or parole.
