The 2024 NFL season is less than two weeks away, making it the perfect time to preview each of the league’s eight divisions. While each grouping has its fair share of rivalries, few boast the intensity that the NFC East does on an annual basis.

The Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders form one of the NFL’s most heated divisions. There’s nothing but hatred and bad blood between the players and fanbases whenever two of the teams meet, and all signs point to that trend continuing this fall.

With most online sportsbooks offering NFL divisional odds, it isn’t too early to get in on the action. Let’s dive into this NFC East preview, featuring my predictions and best bets for the division.

NFC East 2024 Preview

Philadelphia Eagles (-110)

As of July 16, the Philadelphia Eagles are BetOnline’s -110 odds-on favorite to win the NFC East. If successful, it’d mark the Eagles’ sixth division crown since the 2010 NFL season.

The Eagles’ 2023 campaign didn’t end as planned, falling 32-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round. The devastating loss was enough to force general manager Howie Roseman to be one of the most active offseason participants and it paid off.

Philadelphia now heads into the 2024 campaign with an absolutely stacked roster. In addition to the usual suspects on offense (Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, etc.), the Eagles brought in elite running back Saquon Barkley, as well as pass-catchers Parris Campbell and C.J. Uzomah. That’s without mentioning defensive additions like Bryce Huff, Devin White, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

Is veteran RB Saquon Barkley enough to help put the Eagles over the top? 

It’s hard to doubt the Eagles after all the moves that they’ve made this spring/summer. Not only are they the favorites to win the NFC East, but they’re also tied for the third-best odds to win Super Bowl LVIX (+1200) on BetOnline.

For comparison, the Cowboys sit 10th at +1800.

In other words, the NFC East is the Eagles’ division to lose at this point. They boast the most talent among the four teams, meaning they should be fine as long as the key players live up to expectations. If all goes to plan, it won’t be surprising if Philadelphia is challenging for another Super Bowl title come February.

Dallas Cowboys (+150)

Even though they won the NFC East in two of the last three seasons (including 2023), the Dallas Cowboys only have the second-best odds to win the 2024 title.

Although the Cowboys have plenty of elite talent, you can argue that their current roster isn’t as good as last year. After all, Jerry Jones began the offseason without much urgency, allowing the rest of the 31 teams to scoop up big-name free agents while America’s Team sat idle for weeks. Even though Dallas had a strong draft showing to somewhat make up for the lackluster free agency showing, it doesn’t change the fact that the team still lost the following players:

• Stephon Gilmore, CB
• Tyron Smith, LT
• Dorance Armstrong, DE
• Tyler Biadasz, C
• Dante Fowler, DE

No matter how you slice it, that’s a lot of talent to lose and it wouldn’t be shocking if the Cowboys are worse because of it. That’s without mentioning how the coaching staff also underwent changes with Mike Zimmer replacing Dan Quinn as the defensive coordinator. Time will tell if the shake-up pays off after Dallas’ defense collapsed in the 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the postseason.

Is it impossible for the Cowboys to win the NFC East? No because they’re still a top-10 team in the league. Having said that, a lot will have to go right for them to overcome the Eagles on their way up.

New York Giants (+1000)

It’s another year where New York Giants fans wonder if their team will finally take that next step forward.

After all, the Giants have been dreadful ever since winning the Super Bowl over a decade ago. They’ve qualified for the NFL playoffs just once in the last 12 years and haven’t even won the NFC East since 2011. It doesn’t help that they’ve also failed to win more than six games in eight of the last 10 seasons, further illustrating just how bad things have been.

Can the Giants avoid finishing with yet another losing record in 2024? 

Unfortunately, the Giants’ outlook isn’t that promising. Sure, they added sixth-overall pick Malik Nabers to the offense, but Daniel Jones is still, well, Daniel Jones. It doesn’t help that the offensive line in front of him is atrocious, as well as the fact that New York replaced long-time starting RB Saquon Barkley with Devin Singletary, who’s yet to hit the 900-yard mark in five seasons.

While the defense is far from the worst in the league, the offense has too many question marks. The Giants will likely be a 6/7-win team again while leaving their fans saying “There’s always next year!” for the umpteenth time.

Washington Commanders (+1000)

The Washington Commanders are one of those teams that could either exceed expectations or finish at the bottom of the NFC East.

On one hand, the Commanders are coming off a 4-13 campaign and have averaged just 6.3 wins across the last three seasons. They’re also entering the season with new head coach Dan Quinn, who owns a 14-23 record in his last three seasons as an NFL coach, making it interesting to see if he learned anything during his time as a Cowboys assistant.

On the other hand, the team did improve on both sides of the ball this offseason. Austin Ekeler has joined the backfield, forming one of the league’s top rushing tandems with Brian Robinson Jr. Wideouts Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Dyami Brown are ready to take the next step forward and the offensive line has gotten better, too. Even the defense saw a handful of improvements with Dante Fowler and Dorance Armstrong following Quinn from one organization to another.

At the end of the day, the Commanders’ chance of success likely hinges on rookie QB Jayden Daniels. If the 2024 second-overall selection can live up to his potential, Washington could be a dark horse in the NFC. But if he isn’t ready and the team is forced to start Marcus Mariota at any point, it’ll likely be another last-place finish for Quinn’s squad.

NFC East 2024 prediction: Philadelphia Eagles (-110)

The Eagles are the most well-rounded team in the NFC East, boasting elite playmakers at most positions. The Cowboys are the only team that can realistically challenge them, however, I don’t see that happening given all the pieces Dallas lost in the last few months.
