NFL analyst calls for New York Giants to bench Daniel Jones | Sporting News
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is catching heat from just about every corner.
The numbers from his Week 1 outing against the Minnesota Vikings were worse than what they looked like — for those who dared to watch.
It’s gotten to the point where even opposing players are expressing pity over the struggles and subsequent treatment of the sixth-year quarterback.
Still, the Giants are sticking with Jones as the starting quarterback for now as they prepare for the game against the Washington Commanders.
In suggesting ways for the losing teams in Week 1 to avoid an 0-2 start, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report urged the Giants to send Jones to the bench.
“The New York Giants appear to be hopeless with Daniel Jones at the helm. After an embarrassing loss at home against a Sam Darnold-led Vikings squad, the G-Men are now 22-37-1 in games the beleaguered signal-caller start,” Kay wrote. “It’s time for Drew Lock to step up into the starting role and give the team a chance to play some better football.”
Kay is probably not the only analyst who feels this is the correct course of action for the Giants. The fanbase certainly is leaning that way sooner rather than later.
We may very well get to that tipping point later during the season if Jones continues to struggle. The Giants simply cannot compete at a necessary level if he plays like he did in Week 1.
Putting Drew Lock under center probably isn’t much better. He’s a solid quarterback and a potential spot starter, but he hasn’t done much in his career to prove he’s a massive upgrade for the entire season.
Either way, it’s ultimately up to Jones to keep the Giants from replacing him before the season ends.
