NFL best stats and records: How the NFL’s longest day got even longer for Robert Saleh and the New York Jets
Sky Sports Cricket statistician – and big Buffalo Bills fan – Benedict Bermange dives into the 2024 NFL season to pick out the best stats from each week…
On Thursday night, Kirk Cousins posted a career-high 509 passing yards which set a new Atlanta Falcons franchise record. The previous mark of 503 yards was set by Matt Ryan against the Carolina Panthers in Week Four of the 2016 season.
Cousins became the first player in NFL history to have at least 450 passing yards in a game for three different teams, having previously accomplished the feat for Washington and the Minnesota Vikings. He is also the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to throw for at least 250 yards both before and after half-time.
Sunday proved to be the longest day of NFL football since at least the 1970 merger at 15 hours, 27 minutes. The London game kicked off at 2:32pm BST on Sunday, and Sunday Night Football ended at 5:59am BST on Monday after thunderstorms delayed the kick-off for 90 minutes.
It was also the first time in history there were two 100-plus yard defensive touchdowns on the same day: Seattle Seahawks safety Rayshawn Jenkins returned a goal line fumble for 102 yards and Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II returned a Gardner Minshew interception 100 yards.
In the course of throwing for 244 passing yards in the New York Jets’ defeat to the Vikings in London, Aaron Rodgers became the ninth NFL quarterback to pass for 60,000 yards.
Sky Sports NFL’s early game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals saw a season-high 79 points and 962 combined yards, with the 79 points the most in any of the 57 games between the two sides.
Derrick Henry became the 32nd player in NFL history to reach 10,000 rushing yards as he helped the Ravens to their 38th straight game with at least 100 yards on the ground, the joint third-longest streak of all-time:
Trevor Lawrence celebrated his birthday by leading the Jacksonville Jaguars over the Indianapolis Colts to their first win of the season, passing for a career-high 371 yards and two touchdowns. Only two players have had more passing yards on their birthdays: David Woodley (408 yards) and Brett Favre (390).
Jayden Daniels led the Commanders to victory over the Cleveland Browns and became the first player with at least 1,000 passing yards and 250 rushing yards in his first five NFL games. The last time the Commanders started with a record as good as 4-1 was in the 2008 season.
The Arizona Cardinals shut out the San Francisco 49ers in the second half of their 24-23 victory, inflicting the first scoreless half on Brock Purdy in his NFL career. The Cardinals became the first team to come back from a 10-plus point deficit entering the fourth quarter and win against Kyle Shanahan in his 49ers tenure, the team having won their previous 38 such games.
Despite losing to the Dallas Cowboys, TJ Watt became the second-fastest player to reach 100 career sacks, achieving the mark in 109 games. Only Hall of Famer Reggie White (96 games) has got there faster.
