NFL bettors hammering the over on Steelers’ 2024 win total

Sports bettors are bullish on the Steelers’ prospects for the 2024 NFL season. 

After opening with a win total of 7.5, Pittsburgh’s preseason over/under has been bet up to 8.5 wins at BetMGM Sportsbook – and the over is still getting hammered. 

Steelers to win more than 8.5 games is the most bet-on over on the board at BetMGM, outpacing the Panthers (over 4.5 wins) and Bears (over 8.5 wins). 

A massive 94 percent of tickets and 97 percent of the handle at BetMGM is on the Steelers to win nine or more games. 

Although they haven’t won a playoff game since 2016, the Steelers have been a machine when it comes to finishing at .500 or better under head coach Mike Tomlin. 

The team hasn’t had a losing season during Tomlin’s 17-year tenure in Pittsburgh, and have only had one losing season (2003) during the 21st century. 

The Steelers are entering a new era at the quarterback position after trading away Kenny Pickett.

Pittsburgh added Russell Wilson in free agency in March, and just days later traded for Bears signal-caller Justin Fields for a conditional sixth-round pick. 

After the series of moves, Tomlin affirmed that Wilson was expected to be the team’s Week 1 starter at quarterback, but the door was open for Fields to steal the job. 

“We’ve been very transparent about the pecking order, at least to start,” Tomlin said, according to ESPN, at the time. “I just think that provides clarity for all parties involved. Russell is a veteran, man. He’s got a proven process of readiness. He’s been in this league a long time. He’s capable of rallying troops, receivers, tight ends, running backs, etc.

Betting on the NFL?

“He’s just got a lot of experience in terms of what it takes to be the guy over the course of a 12-month calendar and I just think that that’s something that a younger guy like Justin could learn from.”

Wilson is currently a –720 favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook to be behind center come the start of the 2024 season despite the acquisition of Fields, who is a +450 long shot to take Wilson’s starting spot.
