NFL insider makes emphatic prediction on Daniel Jones’ fate with Giants | Sporting News

The New York Giants are in the middle of their bye week pondering a massive decision that will have a major impact on both the short-term and the future of the organization.

Following an embarrassing 20-17 overtime loss against the Carolina Panthers in Germany, head coach Brian Daboll and the rest of the coaching staff are evaluating the quarterback position.

In other words, there’s a good chance Daniel Jones loses his starting job coming out of the bye week.

While nothing has been made official yet, Adam Schefter of ESPN made an emphatic statement on what he predicts the Giants will decide.

“I would guess that we don’t see Daniel Jones play another down for the Giants,” Schefter said. “Because Brian Daboll’s tone yesterday was different than it was in other weeks. It was always ‘Daniel Jones is our starter, Daniel Jones is our starter, Daniel Jones is our starter’ and then yesterday ‘we’re evaluating everything.'”

It seems likely that the Jones era is coming to an end. Whether the Giants will make that decision for the remainder of the 2024 season remains to be seen, but it’s widely expected that the Giants will cut ties this offseason.

Jones has not progressed enough during his sixth season in the NFL to suggest he can make the leap toward being a productive franchise quarterback. With two more years left on the four-year, $160 million deal he signed, the Giants will take a hit against the cap while also saving some money for the future.

If the Giants go forward with benching Jones, they will have to turn to either Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito for the remainder of the season.

We may not get an update on Jones’ status until next week when the Giants return from the bye, but Schefter’s emphatic prediction could come true.
