NFL Rumors: Daniel Jones ‘Probably’ Signs Contract This Week as QB Eyes Super Bowl

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini believes that former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will “probably” sign with another team this week.

“I was told there are several teams that are interested in bringing Daniel Jones on,” Russini said on Tuesday’s episode of the Scoop City podcast (5:00 mark.) “Perhaps maybe the Raiders make sense, right, because they’ve got injuries in their quarterback room. But we’ll see where he winds up, if perhaps maybe he wants to be a little bit more patient, wait it out a little, and join a playoff team.

“Either way, based on conversations, I was told that it will probably happen this week.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that Jones is likely to “sign relatively quickly” with another team.

Jones cleared waivers on Monday after he was released on Friday in the middle of his sixth season with the Giants. The No. 6 pick of the 2019 draft left New York having led the Giants to a 24-44-1 overall record.

Giants owner John Mara said that Jones had requested the release after he was benched and demoted to QB4 in the team’s practice order behind Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock and Tim Boyle.

Should he have been picked up waivers, Jones would have been owed more than $11.8 million for the remainder of the 2024 season. He could also have picked up $23 million in injury guarantees had he been injured before the 2025 campaign, per ESPN.

By going unclaimed, Jones became an unrestricted free agent who can sign a new contract. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that the former Giants starter wants his next deal to be with “a playoff contender.”

That aim would rule out the Raiders, a team that fell to 2-9 on the season following Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos. Gardner Minshew also suffered a season-ending broken collarbone during the loss, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, and former starter Aidan O’Connell is uncertain for Week 13 amid his recovery from a fractured thumb.

Schefter named the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings as “two of the likeliest teams” to sign Jones.

When asked about Jones on Monday, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said that he has “tons of respect for Daniel Jones as a player and a person” after getting to know him during the lead-up to the 2019 draft.

The Ravens could meanwhile look to add Jones as competition to back up Lamar Jackson.

Rapoport also described the 49ers as a possible destination for Jones due to the shoulder injury that sidelined starting quarterback Brock Purdy last week.

Tommy DeVito is set to start when the Giants play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. By then, Jones might have already signed with another team.
