The New York Giants’ quarterback depth took a hit on Friday.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Giants signal-caller Drew Lock suffered a “bad” bone contusion as well as strained oblique during the team’s 14-3 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.
Rapoport noted that surgery isn’t required, although New York could still search for other options at quarterback as Lock is expected to miss “some time.”
The 27-year-old signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Giants on March 12.
Lock exited Thursday’s game during the first quarter due to his injuries. Prior to his departure, he completed four out of 10 throws for 17 yards to go along with an interception. He was also sacked once.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters after the game that Lock was “sore,” adding that he doesn’t “foresee it being a long time” until he’s able to return to the field.
Even if he’s not out for an extended period of time, New York may still look to add another signal-caller behind starter Daniel Jones. As Jones’ preseason status is up in the air as he returns from a torn ACL, Tommy DeVito is the only other quarterback on the roster after the team released Nathan Rourke on July 28.
Lock should still serve as the Giants’ primary backup option when he’s able to return, as he has 23 career starts under his belt since he entered the NFL as a second-round pick in the 2019 draft. He appeared in four games with the Seattle Seahawks in 2023, recording a 63.2 completion percentage and racking up 543 passing yards as well as three touchdowns.
New York could add another quarterback prior to the team’s next preseason contest, a clash with the Houston Texans on Aug. 17. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET.
