New York City has become the first city in the United States to implement a congestion pricing system, charging motorists a fee to drive into the bustling midtown Manhattan area. The toll, which began on January 5, aims to reduce traffic and pollution in the Big Apple while raising critical funds for the densely packed city’s ailing public transit infrastructure – ageing subway, bus and commuter rail systems.
