NY Giants 2024 injury tracker: Which players are out and when might they return?

EAST RUTHERFORD – Injuries are a part of football. We know this.

And so do the New York Giants, who have taken their fair share of hits in this department through the years.

This is our gathering spot for all Big Blue injury updates, and we’ll keep this tracker through the rest of the preseason and into the 2024 season. Here’s the latest status for all players dealing with an injury:

Tyrone Tracy

Position: Running back.

Injury: Low ankle sprain

Estimated return: Late August to early September.

Summary: Based on how the scene at Tuesday’s practice played out, the belief was that the Giants and their fifth-round rookie would need somewhat of a miracle in order to avoid a serious injury. Well, football prayers may have been answered.

There are certainly situations when we all put the cart before the horse and exaggerate details when reporting play-by-play of injuries. Not this time. When you see a player go down the way Tracy went down, an air cast comes out immediately with the training staff and then he goes off on a cart, straight to Hospital for Special Surgery for tests, worst fears are more often than not confirmed.

The Giants and Tracy have apparently gotten lucky here. The latest: belief is that Tracy sustained a Grade 2 low ankle sprain. Considered week to week in a walking boot. Typical recovery ranges from 3-6 weeks – all patients are different, of course – which is much preferred to what the alternative appeared to be. That’ll put him right in line for the start of the season or shortly thereafter if all goes well.

Malik Nabers

Position: Wide Receiver

Injury: Low ankle sprain

Estimated return: Day to day

Summary: Nabers and the Giants lucked out on this one. He’s already working back with treatment and light running to the point where he could be back on the field well before Week 1. The Giants are going to be cautious, though, so don’t expect the rookie to rush the recovery. He expressed confidence he’ll be good to go for the regular season.

Jon Runyan

Position: Offensive line

Injury: Shoulder

Estimated return: Day to day

Summary: Runyan left Monday’s practice late after tweaking his shoulder. The Giants pulled back on their starting left guard and gave him a day off, his first of the summer. Don’t be surprised if Runyan ramps back up and returns to practice within the next week or so.

Dru Phillips

Position: Cornerback

Injury: Ankle

Estimated return: Day to day

Summary: The Giants’ rookie and starting nickel corner has missed consecutive practices after tweaking his ankle. There’s a chance he returns to the field after three days off on Thursday.

Cor’Dale Flott

Position: Cornerback

Injury: Quad

Estimated return: Week to week

Summary: Flott tweaked his quad in the joint practices against the Lions, halting his quest to keep the CB2 job. We’re not sure how close he is to returning.

Dyontae Johnson

Position: Inside linebacker

Injury: Ankle

Estimated return: Week to week

Summary: Johnson was having a great summer and was challenging for time with the first-team defense next to Bobby Okereke when he injured his ankle in the preseason opener against the Lions. He’s in a walking boot and is expected to miss some time, which will put his availability for the start of the season in some doubt. His quest to make the 53-man roster is on hold.

Lawrence Cager

Position: Tight end

Injury: Groin

Estimated return: Week to week

Summary: Cager got off to such a strong start to camp after an encouraging spring, but he followed up a hamstring injury by tweaking his groin Monday. Brian Daboll seemed to indicate the injury is going to take some time from which to recover.

Gervarrius Owens

Position: Safety

Injury: Knee

Estimated return: Week to week

Summary: Owens was quietly having a very good camp, moving his way up the depth chart to second team before being sidelined. His return is uncertain.

Jalen Mills

Position: Safety

Estimated return: Week to week

Summary: Mills arrived for training camp with a calf injury sustained in training away from the team. He was placed on the Non-Football Injury list and has been working with the training staff.
