NY swift-water rescue team returns from assisting NC communities
ALTAMONT, N.Y. (WCAX) – New York’s swift-water rescue team is back home after helping North Carolina recover from Hurricane Helene.
The team of 16 spent two weeks in Yancey County performing swift-water rescues and carrying people to safety. They rescued and evacuated dozens, many who couldn’t call 911.
“All the essential infrastructure for the entire county was decimated in a period of four hours. No cell service, no electric, no water. No ability to communicate at all,” said Deputy Chief David Harrington of the Rushville, North Carolina, Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
Certain mountain communities in North Carolina are still difficult to reach. Members of the U.S. Army and National Guard are working to help impacted communities.
