NYC doorman reflects on decadelong career in memoir

In “Building Material,” author Stephen Bruno reflects on more than a decade of experiences as a doorman, sharing both the triumphs and challenges of a profession that is often overlooked in New York City.

Bruno writes about the unique nature of the job, and highlights that it’s not an easy one to come by.

“There’s no online application or job fair for a position as a doorman. It’s one of those primo New York City jobs that’s hard to find and rarely discussed. When you knock into a doorman job, you hold on tight – real tight,” he wrote in his book.

In an interview with “Mornings On 1” Friday, Bruno also discussed how his job on Park Avenue gave him a broader perspective on the city and the people who live in it.

“I have a more full view of New York City. I’ve seen all the demographics. You see wealthy people, you see lower class people and you find out they’re all people. We all have ambitions, we all have dreams, we all work hard, we all have stress, heartbreak, happiness,” he said.
