NYS Comptroller report shows higher education sector boosts economy, but job recovery remains an issue since pandemic
ALBANY (WBNG) — A new report from New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli shows the state’s higher-education sector boosts economies but job recovery is behind since the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The report stated that 290 degree-granting postsecondary institutions employed more than 296,000 people and paid wages of around $26.5 billion in 2023.
Of note, DiNapoli’s report said the Southern Tier contains the highest share of higher education employment throughout the state at 7.9%. DiNapoli noted that Binghamton University and Cornell University contribute greatly to this share.
However, the report said the sector has had more than 13,000 fewer jobs since the pandemic.
No region in New York State has fully recovered from the jobs that were lost in 2021 and 2022, DiNapoli’s office said. The Southern Tier fared the best though, with being just 3.6% below 2019 levels of employment.
