We’ve got one of the best games of the preliminary portion of the men’s basketball tournament going on, with Australia leading Canada 49-45 at the half. This one has featured 10 lead changes and nine ties.
This game became dramatic quickly, with Canadian (and Oklahoma City Thunder) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander picking up two fouls within the first two minutes.
Canada showed its depth, hitting five 3s in the opening quarter to hang in the game, but the team’s perimeter defence, which is supposed to be a strength, let them down.
Josh Giddey, Patty Mills and Dante Exum took turns getting into the paint for Australia. Giddey, traded by the Thunder to the Chicago Bulls, has 15 points to lead the game in scoring, while Gilgeous-Alexander scored 10.
The winner of this game will lead the group, and likely stay away from a potential matchup with the United States in the quarterfinal, a spot every team would prefer to avoid.
