Penguins Set to Travel to New York for a Dual with Niagara – Youngstown State University

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool as they travel up to the state of New York for a dual at Niagara.

Last Time Out

The Penguins are coming off very respectable showings from both teams at their last meet, the Akron Zips Classic, which was held on October 12th.

The men captured their second overall team victory of the season, totaling 1149.5 points and finishing 66 points ahead of second-place Xavier.

Senior Dom Bono led the way for the men, collecting two wins during the meet. His first win came in the 400 IM, where he swam a time of 3:59.23, and his second win was captured  in the 200 backstroke, where he swam a time of 1:49.17.

The Penguin men dominated the top of the leaderboard in the 50 free, as they claimed five of the top six spots, collecting 78 points in that single event. Freshman Jacob Gramer finished first as he swam a time of 20.66, and then Rares Druga (third), Gavin Redden (fourth), Darren Laing (fifth), and Lorenz Beck (sixth) finished closely behind.

Laing picked up a victory of his own during the meet as he outlasted Redden in the 100 free, swimming a time of 45.13. Other individual victories for the Penguin men during the meet included: Gavin Webb in the 500 free (4:32.09), Brooks Adams in the three-meter dive (265.60 points), and James Slessor in the 200 breaststroke, whose time of 1:59.84 set a new meet record.

The women claimed a third-place finish at the meet while putting together some good performances of their own as they totaled 762 overall points.

Junior standout Miriam Frass picked up the first win of the meet for the women in the 500 free, clocking a time of 4:55.45. The Penguins swam very strongly in this event, as freshmen Olivia Sweetman and Morgan Glass finished second and third behind Frass. The trio finished one-two-three in the 1650 free as well, as Frass swam a time of 16:41.22 to win the event, with Sweetman and Glass finishing right behind her.

Sophomore Hanna Held continued her strong start to the season as she won the three-meter dive event, scoring 269.80 points.

The 800 free relay squad of Frass, Madelyn Mahoney, Glass, and Sweetman finished third, clocking a time of 7:34.16, which was less than six-tenths of a second slower than the second-place team.

Bono Recognized as Part of #HLSD Weekly Awards

Senior Dominic Bono was recognized as the Horizon League Men’s Swimmer of the Week for his efforts at the Akron Zips Classic, winning two events. This was the first selection for Bono as #HLSD swimmer of the week during his Penguin career.
