Police seek suspect in armed robbery at Manhattan business

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. — Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the indictment of Romero Campbell, 23, in connection with the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Joshua Jasmin on August 30, 2024. Campbell, also known as “Romeo,” was charged with Murder in the Second Degree for allegedly shooting Jasmin after a verbal altercation outside Campbell’s home.

“This tragic and senseless act of violence will be thoroughly prosecuted,” said District Attorney Tierney. “We will diligently pursue justice for Joshua and his loved ones.”

The investigation revealed that on August 30, around 6:00 p.m., Campbell and Jasmin were engaged in a verbal dispute on the front lawn of Campbell’s residence on Charter Oaks Avenue. During the confrontation, Campbell allegedly fired two shotgun rounds at Jasmin, hitting him in the torso. An eyewitness confirmed that Jasmin was unarmed during the altercation.

Suffolk County Police responded to the scene and found Jasmin lying in the roadway, shirtless and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital. Body camera footage supported the eyewitness account that Jasmin was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

Upon arriving at the scene, police secured the area, unsure if there were additional victims or an active threat. Officers canvassed the property and observed a shotgun standing inside the kitchen doorway and a spent shotgun shell on the floor. Campbell was found nearby and identified as the alleged shooter. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Surveillance footage from a neighboring property captured the audio of the argument and the shooting. In the footage, Jasmin can be heard calling out “Rome” multiple times before the shots were fired.

On September 12, 2024, Campbell was arraigned on the indictment for Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A felony, before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis. Campbell was remanded and is scheduled to return to court on October 16, 2024. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the top charge. Campbell is represented by George Duncan, Esq.

Assistant District Attorney Eric S. Aboulafia of the Homicide Bureau is prosecuting the case, and the investigation was led by Suffolk County Homicide Squad Detectives Peter Barba and Brendan O’Hara.

Criminal complaints and indictments are merely accusatory instruments. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
