Police snipers at T20 World Cup Games in New York? Security tighetened at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium | Sporting News India

Security has been tightened at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium ahead of the opening match of the T20 World Cup at the venue between Sri Lanka and South Africa on Monday.

The security measures will include SWAT teams as well as police snipers.

The 34,000-temporary stadium at Eisenhower Park has been erected for the T20 world event. It will also host the marquee clash between India and Pakistan on June 9.

Is there a security threat over the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup clash?

India will be clashing against arch-rivals Pakistan in an highly anticipated game at the T20 World Cup on Sunday, and for the first time on US soil.

Last week, the Long Island authorities stated that they had received a ‘lone-wolf attack’ (a mass murder attempt in a public place by an individual) threat. The NYPD has also ensured fans that the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium will be the ‘safest place’ on June 9 due to the heightened security measures.

Taking to CBS news, New York Police Comissioner Patrick Ryder stated that it had been the largest security that they ever had to manage in the nation’s history. The ICC released a statement regarding the issue as well:

The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place. We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event.

Recently, in India’s only warm-up game against Bangladesh, a fan invaded the pitch to meet the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma. Considering the on-going to threats over the players and team for the World Cup, the fan was tackled to the ground by the NY police as he approached the 36-year-old. 

Nassau Police force working effortlessly to ensure everyone’s safety

The Nassau police force has been working closely with the NY police, Federal buereau of Investigation and USA Homeland security inorder to counter any threats with respect to the on-going tournament. 

The Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman also stated that the security for the World Cup will be similar to the Super Bowl, but much much tighter. Fans will have to go throught heavy security checks before entering the stadium premises.
