Popular Southcoast bagel shop slammed on opening day in Taunton. What makes it special?

TAUNTON — Busy is an understatement to describe opening day for the brand-new Mobil Gas Station/Premier Convenience Store, located at 1939 Bay St., a heavily trafficked part of North Taunton within close proximity to the entrance to the Myles Standish Industrial Park.

“Everybody is excited to have a gas station in the neighborhood. There are people who have lived in this area for 40 years who are excited to have it here because of the inconvenience it’s been not to have it here,” said Daniel Lima, co-owner of the Mobil and Premier Convenience Store.

The pumps were full and forming lines, and Premier had its customers coming in to buy snacks and beverages.

However, arguably the bigger and more unique draw was the opening of New York Bagel Co., which is leasing space inside Premier.

“There’s been no slow buildup in sales today,” said Dawn Lima (no relation to Daniel), co-owner of NY Bagel Co. “Our sales are matching our busiest location, Fall River, today,” for both walk-in store orders or drive-thru orders, she said about opening day in Taunton.

Lima added her staff of 20 at Taunton’s new New York Bagel Co. have been training for two months at their other locations, in Fall River and North Dartmouth, for this day.

Bagels baked fresh every day

Dawn Lima said none of their bagels are “frozen, mass produced,” like from other franchises. All bagels at New York Bagel Co. are “baked fresh every day” at their location in North Dartmouth, and then driven to their other locations.

What’s on the bagel menu?

New York Bagel Co. has a large variety of bagels. Besides staples like plain, whole wheat, rye, poppy seed, blueberry, garlic, and pumpernickel, you also have some unique pairings with bagels, such as jalapeno cheddar, salsa, chocolate chip, sundried tomato, and french toast.

Along with the variety of bagels comes an assortment of cream cheeses and spreads, including strawberry, garlic and herb, lox, blueberry, horseradish, and a spicy three-pepper diablo.

Coffee, tea, espresso beverages, and apple cider are all offered, both hot and cold.

Wareham-based Jim’s Organic Coffee is utilized as the in-house brand for New York Bagel Co.

Lunch sandwiches and pizza bagels

Ten options for lunch sandwiches are offered, including hot pastrami, pan-roasted turkey, chicken salad, BLT and roast beef.

Other lunch items include pizza bagels, chourico rolls, bagel dogs, and garden salads with the option of adding grilled chicken, chicken salad, or tuna salad.

Hours of operation

Mobil and Premier Convenience will be open 24 hours a day.

New York Bagel Co.’s current hours during the week are 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Planning for the future

With Taunton being the third location, Dawn Lima said the next goal is to find space for a bigger kitchen that can accommodate not just the current locations, but future expansion. She said she and the other owners, Cliff Ponte and her husband, Kyle Lima, still want to keep all baking at one centralized location to maintain consistency.

Another restaurant next door?

With Premier Convenience, Daniel Lima said the building has space to lease out for one more eatery business, next door to New York Bagel, but he doesn’t yet have one line up.

Regardless, he adds that he expects the level of business seen on opening day for Premier, Mobil, and New York Bagel to be a regular occurrence.
