Potential quarterback options for Giants if Drew Lock is forced to miss time

The status of backup quarterback Drew Lock is now in question after he suffered an injury in the New York Giants preseason opener against the Detroit Lions.

Ian Rapoport reported that Lock suffered a “bad bone contusion and a strained oblique,” as he’s expected to miss some time (with the time frame still to be determined).

With Lock sidelined, the Giants have just two healthy quarterbacks on their roster. With just starter Daniel Jones and No. 3 quarterback Tommy DeVito, the Giants might need another quarterback to handle both practice and preseason game snaps.

Here are some current free-agent quarterbacks who the Giants might show interest in.

Ryan Tannehill

Although he’s the most experienced quarterback available on the free agent market, Ryan Tannehill is probably a long shot to join the Giants in this scenario.

The 36-year-old is likely looking for a more stable and guaranteed role. Unless Lock’s injury is season-ending (which doesn’t appear to be the case), Tannehill likely isn’t heading to East Rutherford just for a couple of weeks.

Trevor Siemian

Siemian is another veteran who is familiar with the tri-state area and has a good amount of NFL experience under his belt. Last season, the now 32-year-old played in five games for the cross-town rival New York Jets, as he’s served as both a starter and backup throughout his seven-year career.

A.J. McCarron

While McCarron doesn’t have as much experience as others on the list, the 33-year-old might bewilling to head to East Rutherford if the Giants offer him the opportunity to earn some significant playing time during the remainder of the preseason as he hopes to rejuvenate his NFL career.

Kellen Mond

Of the players on this list, Kellen Mond might be the most intriguing.

The 26-year-old was a former third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings but appeared in just one game with the franchise.

Now as a free agent, maybe Mond just needs an opportunity to see the field and prove that he deserves another shot (whether with the Giants or someone else).

Matt Barkley and Jacob Eason

Why are these two combined?

Well, it’s rather simple: both spent time with the Giants organization during the 2023 season.

While neither player saw the field for the Giants during the 2023 campaign, the organization liked them both enough to give them opportunities on the practice squad and the active roster. If depth is simply what the Giants are looking for at the moment, they may reunite with one of these quarterbacks to help make that happen.
