Practice Report (7/29): Up close for 1-on-1 drills

* Aaron Stinnie stepped in at left guard (with Jermaine Eluemunor at right tackle for Evan Neal, who is on PUP) and proved difficult to get past. Stinnie got his hands in the right place and once he was attached to the rusher, he held his ground and didn’t let the rusher get around him. He won all three of his reps against different players.

* Kayvon Thibodeaux was the most consistent pass rusher of the defensive line group. He won reps on both the left and right sides against different offensive tackles. He won with power, an inside move, and a traditional speed rush and rip move with his inside hand. He had a good back and forth with Eluemunor on consecutive reps with both players doing well.

* Undrafted rookie Elijah “Baby Bison” Chatman used his leverage to get under and around his opponent for a pair of pass rush wins. Azeez Ojulari flashed some power with an inside move to win a rep before Josh Ezeudu won the following rep when Ojulari tried to beat him outside. Carlos “Boogie” Basham showed inside and outside pass rush power and quickness. Joshua Miles had a pair of impressive wins at left tackle, including one against Brian Burns on an outside spin move. Jordon Riley had a quick win with a swim move inside.

* The Giants ran 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 wide receiver drills and 1-on-1 RB/TE vs. LB drills while the linemen were facing off. Daniel Jones found Isaiah Hodgins on an impressive throw and catch in the middle of the field for a 30+ yard gain. Rookie Dante “Turbo” Miller and Tyrone Tracy Jr. ran a couple of double moves to get behind linebackers for big gains. Dane Belton had a pair of forced incompletions.

* There weren’t nearly as many deep throws today compared to Sunday’s high flying offensive approach. With the team in pads for the first time, they featured more running plays. Devin Singletary’s ability to change direction, find and get through the hole was impressive. Drew Lock made an off-schedule play, stepping up in the pocket and shoveling the ball to Gunner Olszewski, who turned it up field for a big gain.

* Ojulari had pressures at different parts of practice. Tre Hawkins and Dane Belton combined for a pass deflection near the end pf practice. Tre Herndon had a pass break-up from the slot. David Long had a pair of deflections, including one that turned into the play of the day when Gervarrius Owens grabbed the interception. Cornerback Andru Phillps continued to show off his instinct hitting the gap and making multiple plays in the run game. Dyonte Johnson had a run stop and potential sack on an unblocked blitz.

* One of the four team periods featured the offense trying to get the ball out of the shadow of their own end zone from its own one-yard line. They ran the ball well and got some passes out quickly and accurately to avoid a negative play.

* On a play action pass, Daniel Jones found veteran tight end Chris Manhertz on a seam route. Jalin Hyatt caught a pass over the middle on a well-timed throw from Jones.

* The Giants are back in pads tomorrow for a second consecutive day.
