Protesting Jalen Brunson’s 6 Million Deal Accusations, Matt Barnes Continues Knicks Star’s Campaign

Two years ago, critics were quick to call Jalen Brunson overrated and overpaid for $104 million. But now, as he exceeded everyone’s expectations, his $156 million deal feels like a steal, especially considering he left an additional $113 million on the table voluntarily. NBA personalities like Charles Barkley and Matt Barnes are among those who believe he’s worth every penny. Recently, Barnes doubled down, saying Brunson’s performance will continue to surprise people this season just like it did last year.

On Saturday night, Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson shared a clip on his X account, where he chatted with Matt Barnes about Brunson’s rise. Robinson compared Brunson’s hunger to Steph Curry’s return from injury drive before winning a championship. When asked if he saw the same thing in Brunson, Barnes played it cautiously, saying, “Maybe it’s too early for that, but I love everything he’s been able to do.”

Barnes went on to explain that Brunson hasn’t dramatically reinvented himself. Instead, he’s built on his experiences. “He was under Luka for a little bit and did well when Luka was down, then went to New York and, I think, shocked the world with his play.” For Barnes, Brunson has grown into a true leader for the Knicks.

And stats also back Barnes’ claim. Last season, Brunson averaged 35.4 minutes per game, with 28.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, shooting 40.1% from three. His standout performance earned him his first NBA All-Star selection and a spot on the All-NBA Second Team.

Even NBA legend Charles Barkley has chimed in, comparing Brunson to players like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes—athletes who sacrificed big paydays for the sake of their teams. “Brunson is one of the best free agent signings of all time,” Barkley said. A statement Matt Barnes would surely agree with.

Just a few days ago, Matt Barnes shared his excitement for the upcoming NBA season on The Rich Eisen Show, and the New York Knicks were at the center of his predictions. “I can’t wait to see what Brunson does with this. It’s going to be special,” Barnes said.

And the combination of Brunson’s leadership and key acquisitions like Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns has Barnes feeling optimistic about the Knicks’ chances.

Barnes didn’t shy away from defending Brunson’s contract either. “I think all the heat he got for that check was too much… I think he’s underpaid,” Barnes told Rich Eisen. With two new running mates, he believes the Knicks are set for an exciting season of basketball.

Interestingly, Brunson’s impact isn’t just felt by fans. His teammate, Josh Hart, even joked about campaigning for a statue in Brunson’s honor. And it’s not just the players noticing; NBA commissioner Adam Silver also chimed in, sharing his excitement for the Knicks.

Now, with Brunson taking a pay cut to give the Knicks more cap space, fans are waiting to see how the team capitalizes. Last week’s blockbuster trade sending Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to Minnesota for Karl-Anthony Towns was a major shake-up. The only thing left is for the Knicks to finalize the deal with KAT and be ready for the new season.
