Remember Pete Alonso and Gleyber Torres? They’re part of baseball’s Juan Soto free-agency limbo
Although it may seem that Juan Soto — and a handful of starting pitchers (ahem, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried) — are the only free agents this offseason, there is plenty of intrigue elsewhere on the open market.
And two of the most interesting cases are long familiar to New York fans, having been in the spotlight on either side of town for more than five years.
Back in the spring of 2020, Pete Alonso and Gleyber Torres were pictured back-to-back on one of the alternate covers of Sports Illustrated’s baseball preview, as part of what the magazine called “20 for the 20s.”
At the time, Alonso had just broken Aaron Judge’s rookie home-run record, having hit 53 for the Mets in 2019, and Torres was coming off a 38-homer season and a second consecutive All-Star appearance.
